In the past few years, as part of a political project called Vision 2030 to make the Saudi Arabian economy less oil dependent, there has been a massive increase in archeological work in the country. This has led to major discoveries about what Pre-Islamic Arabia was actually like. Previously, the times before Islam, known as Jahiliyyah (a term that roughly translates to “Ignorance), were only understood through literature written during the early Islamic conquests. To many, Arabia was seen as this despotic land of desert and nomadic tribes, prior to the rise of Islam. The thing is—that is not a true picture of the area. With every new discovery, our understanding of this period is radically shifting. Particularly, there have been a lot of discoveries of Christian items, making some believe that Pre-Islamic Arabia was actually Christian. But, is that the truth and what would that mean for us polytheists?
