In western occultism, the word “superstition” is seen as a very negative one. Specifically, western occultist and prophet of Thelema, Aleister Crowley, condemned the idea of superstition. He posited that magick, the magick that brings us closer to the ultimate goal of The Great Work, was the complete opposite of superstition. As well, there was a lot of rhetoric during the Magical Revival, a period of immense esoteric development during the late Victorian and early Edwardian period in Europe, that what was being done by occultists and mystics in lodges was completely different than the spiritualism movement that was happening at the same time.
